Majikal Theatre perform “Vintage Hitchcock: A Live Radio Play” on Tuesday 30th April

On Tuesday 30th April, a new touring theatre group, Majikal Theatre, will be arriving at Offchurch Village Hall to perform “Vintage Hitchcock: A Live Radio Play”. Vintage Hitchcock: A Live Radio Play is an evening of adaptations of three early films directed by Alfred Hitchcock: “The Lodger,” “Sabotage” and “The 39 Steps.”. Spies, murder, love, and other trademarks of Alfred Hitchcock come to life in the style of a 1940s radio broadcast of the master of suspense’s earlier films, with five actors playing dozens of characters, live sound effects and musical underscoring.

Comprising The Lodger, Sabotage and The 39 Steps, Vintage Hitchcock: A Live Radio Play is a triple feature, complete with vintage commercials, that recreates a daring train chase, a serial killer’s ominous presence, and a devastating explosion through the magic of live sound effects and musical underscoring.

Alfred Hitchcock is perhaps the best known and most influential filmmaker in the world, but most people know his later work as the director of North by Northwest, Psycho, and The Birds, and the genially macabre host of television’s Alfred Hitchcock Presents. But there is also a formidable Hitchcock of a far older vintage: Hitchcock before he came to America; before he met Cary Grant, Ingrid Bergman, and Grace Kelly; and working at full power even before the days of talking pictures. Grabbing on to early Hitchcock, as the playwright Joe Landry does, opens up new realms of suspense, mysterious attractions, the dark roots of everyday behaviour, and the everyday roots of dark behaviour.

Majikal Theatre was formed, like many things, over a cheeky glass of wine or two with some good friends. Artistic director, Mike Connell, had built up some strong contacts within the performing arts industry over the years in Coventry, Warwick, Kenilworth, Leamington and beyond, and he dreamed of bringing outstanding productions into intimate venues. Majikal Theatre is looking to bring less well known productions of the highest quality to the villages and theatres of Warwickshire and surrounding counties.

Artistic director Mike Connell said “Imagine stepping back in time to the WBFR Radio studios and experiencing the thrill of watching actors perform a radio broadcast live in the studio. Not only do I get to bring such an incredible production to my home county, but we have been contacted directly by the playwright Joe Landry, who confirmed that we would be the European debut.”

“I’m thrilled to be involved with the European premiere of the published version of ‘Vintage Hitchcock!” playwright Joe Landry said, “It’s been a pleasure serving as a consultant to Mike and everyone at Majikal Theatre, and their production sounds amazing!”
